Lab@Leeds

The Goldman laboratory in Leeds

James Hillier, Ph. D.

After studying Biochemistry at the University of Leicester, I completed a DPhil in the Division of Structural Biology at the University of Oxford, where my research focused on the Frizzled family of GPCRs. I joined the Goldman group as a postdoc in February 2020 where I am working to further our understanding of the structure and function of membrane-bound pyrophosphatases. When I am not purifying membrane proteins, I can be found tending to my collection of exotic plants.

Jessica Boakes, B. Sc.

Jessica obtained a BSc in Biochemistry from the University of Salford in 2017. She joined the Goldman group as a BBSRC iCASE student to work towards the structural characterisation of equilibrative nucleoside transporters (ENTs). During her PhD she is investigating different approaches to the stabilisation of ENTs for structural analysis by X-ray crystallography. Jessica’s research project is in partnership with Novartis, Switzerland.

James Henderson, B. Sc.

I graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 2015 with a first class B.Sc. Before graduating, I completed a project regarding endosomal signalling pathways of GPCRs, supervised by Dr James Hislop. During it, I used HEK-293 cells to perform functional cAMP fluorescent-based assays. I therefore began looking for GPCR based PhDs, which led me to this lab. In 2016, I began a PhD working with Prof. Goldman and Dr Dan Donnelly, which is funded by the BBSRC White Rose DTP.

Andreas Kiessling, M. Sc.

Andreas obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. at the University of Tübingen, Germany with a focus on structural biology techniques. For his Masters thesis, he spent 4 months with Stephen Muench at the University of Leeds to use cryo-electron microscopy in his studies on a bacterial efflux pump. In November 2018, he joined the lab in the EU funded ViBrANT ITN (vibrant-itn.eu).

Anchal Malik, M. Sc.

Anchal obtained an M.Sc. in Biotechnology from Banasthali University, India and has prior research experience at CSIR-IGIB, India. She joined the Goldman group in 2018 to work on the Haemophilus surface fibril (Hsf) in the EU funded ViBrANT ITN. She is studying Hsf, a Trimeric Autotransporter Adhesin of Haemophilus influenzae.

Maria Nikolova, M. Biochem.

I obtained a first in my Masters in Biochemistry at the University of York in 2018 and joined the Goldman lab in October that same year as a White Rose BBSRC DTP student. In my project I will use structural and biophysical methods to investigate the mechanism of the Proteobacterial Antimicrobial Compound Efflux (PACE) family of bacterial multidrug efflux proteins.

Ana Pavic, M. Sc.

Ana obtained her B. Sc. and M. Sc. at the University of Zagreb in Croatia. Her Master’s Thesis research was done in the Goldman lab at the University of Helsinki, working on characterisation of ephrins – ligands of RTKs. She then did a 6 months professional internship at Enzymicals AG, in Greifswald (Germany), expressing and characterising diverse enzymes. Ana is now enrolled in her PhD, as a member of the Postis group at Leeds Beckett University and the Goldman group at the University of Leeds.

Claudia Stohrer, M. Sc.

Claudia obtained her B. Sc. and M. Sc. in Molecular Biology at the University of Basel in Switzerland. After a twelve-month internship at Novartis, she started her PhD in the Goldman group as part of the RAMP (Rationalising membrane protein crystallisation) Marie Curie International training network. During her Ph. D., she aims to establish reliable crystallisation protocols to produce large amounts of protein crystals for time-resolved studies as well as for drug discovery purposes.

Jannik Strauss, M. Sc.

Jannik obtained his MSc in biochemistry from Hannover Medical School (Germany). He then continued with an industrial secondment in the crystallography department of Merck (Darmstadt, Germany) before joining the Goldman group for a PhD as part the EU funded RAMP ITN (https://ramp-itn.eu/). During his PhD, Jannik works towards novel membrane-bound pyrophosphatase structures using conventional and time-resolved x-ray crystallography.

Jack Wright, M. Res.

I am a third year PhD student supervised by Professor Alison Baker, Professor Adrian Goldman, and Assistant Professor Stephen Muench. My research, which is funded through a BBSRC White Rose studentship, is focused on solving the structure of COMATOSE, a family D ABC transporter. Prior to my PhD I gained my M. Res. from the University of Birmingham, and my B. Sc. from De Montfort University. During my B. Sc., I spent 12 months in the Goldman group at the University of Leeds establishing my interest and skills in Structural Biology.

Jake Hill, M. Res.

Jake obtained his BSc in Biochemistry and subsequently completed an MSc by Research in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Lincoln, focusing on cellular protein quality control. He joined the group as a Research Technician in 2020, working in collaboration with Dr Jim Robinson and Professor Ann Morgan.

Pirjo Johnson, M. Sc.

Pirjo is the project officer for the EU ViBrANT Innovative Training Network. She also helps Adrian with all matters Finnish.
